Women's Health Q & A
What is women’s health?
Women’s health is an area of medicine focused on the special health issues of women. Your health needs are unique due to your reproductive organs, which place you at greater risk of certain health conditions, including breast and cervical cancer.
All women should undergo an annual wellness exam to screen for these health concerns. At Heights Family Medicine, Dr. Khalifa offers well-woman examinations to help you stay on top of your health.
She’s also a family medicine physician and can manage any other medical conditions as well, including diabetes, asthma, or hypertension.
What can I expect during a women’s health exam?
Dr. Khalifa takes a holistic approach to care and conducts a comprehensive examination when you come to the office for a women's health exam. During your evaluation, she reviews your medical and gynecological history and performs a pelvic exam.
She also conducts a breast exam to screen for breast cancer and a Pap smear to assess your risk of cervical cancer. During a Pap smear, Dr. Khalifa gently swabs a sample of cells from your cervix and sends it to the lab to check for cell abnormalities.
It’s generally recommended that you get a Pap smear every three years from age 21 up until age 65. However, Dr. Khalifa may recommend more frequent testing if you have a family history of cervical cancer or a history of an abnormal Pap smear.
To further evaluate your health, Dr. Khalifa may request blood work, which is conducted at the in-house lab. She may also recommend additional health screenings, such as a mammogram or bone density test, based on your age and needs.
After your exam, Dr. Khalifa may talk to you about prevention and wellness and make recommendations regarding vaccinations and lifestyle changes to support or improve your overall health and well-being.
Can I get birth control during a women’s health visit?
In addition to assessing your health, Dr. Khalifa also prescribes contraception. She can review all of your contraceptive options and help you determine the best method of birth control that meets your family-planning needs. However, Heights Family Medicine doesn’t offer intrauterine devices (IUDs).
